Once again the holy month of Ramadaan is here and Muslims all over the world are fasting from sunrise to sunset. A question that often crops up is: ‘Can I fast if I’m pregnant?’
Any woman who has been pregnant can tell you what a toll it takes on her body. You’re looking after two people now and your baby needs all the nutrients it can get to make it healthy and strong.
Pregnant women are often tired and nauseous and fasting can make it a little bit harder.

About 145 000 policemen, traffic officers and prison warders will join the public sector wage strike on Saturday, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said on Wednesday.
"Hereby today, we wish to categorically state [our] intention to join the current national public service strike action as a revolutionary duty to ensure that our working class power and a demand for a living wage is asserted," Popcru spokesperson Norman Mampane said in a statement.
"We have served... a

Officials investigating ways to lower domestic steel prices will report their findings within two months, a senior government official said on Wednesday.
The task team, comprising officials from the departments of trade and industry (DTI), mineral resources and economic development, was formed after a bitter pricing row between ArcelorMittal South Africa and Kumba Iron Ore threatened the country's steel industry.
"Certainly our Minister (of Trade and Industry Rob Davies) has instructed us

– Growthpoint Properties [JSE:GRT], South Africa's biggest listed property group, said on Wednesday the sector underestimated the effect increases in rates and electricity would have on rental income.
CEO Norbert Sasse said at a presentation of the group's annual results to end-June the rise in rates and electricity tariffs are having a major impact on tenants.
"It's pushing up the total cost of occupancy," said Sasse. "Tenants have a ceiling on how much they can absorb."

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) said on Wednesday that it had not yet imposed any penalties on SA mobile firms for poor network standards, more than a year after introducing regulations which included hefty fines for connectivity failures.
Icasa released the final version of its End-User and Subscriber Service Charter regulations at the end of July 2009, which then came into effect in August.
Mobile communications companies would be subjected to a R500 000 fine for

On the fourth anniversary of its operations in South Africa, telecommunications network operator Neotel has snubbed consumers, saying it has little interest in anything other than corporate and middle-sized companies as well as its wholesale customers.
The company was awarded South Africa's second network operator (SNO) licence in 2005 with a firm mandate to tackle the monopoly of incumbent network Telkom [JSE:TKG]. Since then the market has been effectively deregulated in terms of network l

South Africa's retailing industry said it was prepared for the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), a new law which now holds it liable for products along with manufacturers, importers and distributors.
Insurance group Chartis said on Wednesday that the CPA, which takes effect from October, will expose retailers to liability actions from consumers while product recalls are also likely to increase.
The new legislation has been described as "onerous" on the supply chain while offering the best p

It looks increasingly unlikely that the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) will come into effect in October, as prescribed by legislation.
The CPA, which was signed into law on April 24 2009 by then President Kgalema Motlanthe, is due to come into effect on October 24 this year.
But all indications suggest Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies will extend the date of implementation by another six months.
"The primary hold-up in relation to the implementation of the Consumer Protection

South Africans might get an extra public holiday in 2011 if national census day is declared a public holiday.
The proposal for a public holiday – in the hope that people would be home that day – had arisen from increasing political insistence that next year's population census should be more accurate than those of previous years.
Howard Gabriels, chairperson of the statutory Statistics Council in South Africa, told the standing committee on finance on Wednesday that he nevertheless be

Former ministers of trade and industry had to pay for allowing ArcelorMittal SA [JSE:ACL] (Amsa) to "plunder" the country for decades.
This was a request directed by a senior ANC MP, Professor Ben Turok, to the portfolio committee on trade and industry on Wednesday.
Expressing disbelief, he asked what on earth the former ministers had done in the name of our country.
The committee was discussing the crucial importance of the steel price to a developing economy – and to the manufactur

LAN
A LAN is a Local Area Network. This would include networks where the computers are relatively close together. So LANs would be within the same office, a single building, or several buildings close together.
The graphic at the right shows two buildings with 4 departments connected as a LAN.
